Finishing a woodworking project is the culmination of all your hard work. Why settle for anything less than the best? As a furniture maker, I've tried many finishes over the years, and Rubio Monocoat has become my go-to.

Why Rubio?

Rubio Monocoat doesn't simply soak into the wood like traditional oils. Instead, it forms a unique bond with the very top layer of wood fibres. This creates a remarkably strong and durable finish that protects the wood from within, while also enhancing its natural beauty. Unlike many oils that require multiple coats to maintain their appearance, Rubio offers long-lasting protection and a beautiful matte finish with a single application.

Choosing the Right Rubio

Selecting the right Rubio product is crucial for achieving the best desired finish.

  • For Internal Projects:

    • Rubio 2C: This is the most versatile option for interior projects.

      • Rubio 2C Pure: This is the ideal choice for a natural look. It enhances the wood's natural beauty without adding any colour.

      • Colour Options: If you prefer a darker or more vibrant finish, Rubio 2C is available in a wide range of colours. Rubio offers tester sachets for many of their colours, allowing you to experiment with different shades on a small sample of wood before committing to a larger container. This helps you find the perfect match for your project and avoid any unexpected colour surprises.

      • Pre-Colouring: For deeper colours, use Rubio's water-based dyes before applying the oil. This allows you to achieve a more intense and even colour.

  • For External Projects:

    • Rubio DuroGrit: This is the ideal choice for outdoor projects that require a highly durable and weather-resistant finish.

      • Robust Finish: DuroGrit offers excellent protection against rain, sun, and even minor impacts. Its paint-like consistency makes it easy to apply evenly.

      • Colour Options: DuroGrit is available in a range of colours to suit your aesthetic preferences.

      • Application: It can be easily applied with a brush or sprayer. For spray application, you can mix up to 20% water with DuroGrit to improve flow and prevent clogging in the spray gun. This allows for a smoother and more even application.

Preparation is Key

This stage is absolutely crucial for achieving a professional-looking and long-lasting finish with Rubio Monocoat. Proper preparation ensures the oil adheres effectively and provides the best possible protection for your wood.

  • Sanding:

    • Grit Selection: Aim for a sanding range of 120-180 grit sandpaper. For kitchen worktops, 120 grit is often sufficient and may even be preferable to minimize the visibility of scratches that may occur during daily use.

    • Wood Species: Softer woods like pine may benefit from sanding to a slightly higher grit (closer to 180) as they are more susceptible to sanding marks.

    • Technique: Always sand with the grain to create a smoother surface and minimise the appearance of sanding marks. Remember that each subsequent grit should remove the scratches left by the previous one.

  • Cleaning:

    • Dust Removal: Dust particles can interfere with the oil's adhesion and affect the final finish. Rubio's Wood Prep Cleaner is a helpful tool for removing sanding dust and preparing the wood surface for optimal oil and colour absorption.

    • Tack Cloth: A tack cloth is essential for removing any remaining dust particles that the cleaner may have missed.

    • Vacuuming: I highly recommend vacuuming, where possible, the entire work area before using the tack cloth. This helps to remove larger dust particles and creates a cleaner working environment.

By carefully preparing the wood surface through proper sanding and thorough cleaning, you'll create an ideal foundation for the Rubio Monocoat to bond effectively, resulting in a stunning and long-lasting finish.

Mixing the Oil

Rubio Monocoat 2C is a two-part system, consisting of the oil and a hardener. Mixing these components correctly is crucial for achieving the desired finish and ensuring proper curing.

  • Mixing Ratio: Always adhere to the recommended 3:1 mixing ratio (3 parts oil to 1 part hardener).

  • Use Syringes: Syringes are the most accurate method for measuring the oil and hardener. This ensures precise measurements and prevents inconsistencies in the final mixture.

  • Thorough Mixing: After measuring, thoroughly mix the oil and hardener in a clean container. Use a mixing stick or stir vigorously to ensure a homogenous mixture.

The hardener plays a vital role in the curing process. It not only speeds up the drying time but also enhances the durability of the finished product.

Application Techniques

The application method can significantly impact the final appearance and the ease of application. Rubio Monocoat offers several application techniques to suit different projects and preferences.

  • Beige Scrubbies:

    • Ideal for: Intricate details, uneven surfaces, and mouldings.

    • Method: Apply the oil to the beige scrubbie or workpiece and gently work it into the wood's grain.

    • Scrubbie Selection: Use a beige scrubbie specifically designed for applying Rubio 2C products.

  • Spatula:

    • Ideal for: Large, flat surfaces like tabletops and flat panelled doors.

    • Method: Apply a small amount of oil to your workpiece, then spread the oil evenly across the surface using gentle pressure. Keep applying oil until the entire area has been covered.

    • Benefits: The spatula helps to minimise product waste and ensures even coverage by limiting the amount of oil that is on your workpiece.

  • Application Tip:

    • Work in Sections: Always work in small, manageable sections. Apply the oil to a small area, then wipe off the excess with a clean, lint-free cloth.

    • Time Limit: Remove excess within 15 minutes of applying the oil to avoid it becoming gummy and difficult to remove.

    • Clean Cloths: Use clean cotton cloths to remove excess oil. Avoid using old, dyed or dirty cloths, as they can contaminate the finish.

    • Important reminder: To prevent fire hazards, all materials used during application, such as cloths, Scrubbies, and containers, should be thoroughly soaked in water before disposal. Oil-soaked materials can spontaneously combust.

Adding Sheen: Rubio Monocoat Sheen Plus

Rubio Monocoat offers a natural matte finish. However, if you desire a slightly more pronounced sheen or wish to enhance the contrast of the wood grain, you can use Rubio Monocoat Sheen Plus.

  • Application: Sheen Plus is applied 24 hours after the initial application of Rubio 2C oil.

  • Mixing: Mix Sheen Plus in a 3:1 ratio (oil to hardener), similar to the 2C oil.

  • Application Method: Use a red scrubbie to apply a small amount of Sheen Plus to the surface.

  • Removal: Leave Sheen Plus on the surface for a maximum of 15 minutes. Then, use a white scrubbie to absorb the excess. Finally, remove any remaining residue with a clean tack cloth.

  • Finishing Touch: Reapply the same white scrubbie used in the previous step, following the grain of the wood.

  • Drying Time: Sheen Plus requires approximately 5 days to fully cure.

By selecting the appropriate application technique and following these guidelines, you can achieve a professional and even application of Rubio Monocoat.

Maintenance

Proper maintenance is essential to preserve the beauty and durability of your Rubio Monocoat finish.

  • Initial Curing:

    • Avoid Contact: During the initial 24-hour curing period, avoid touching the surface as much as possible. This allows the oil to fully bond with the wood and minimises the risk of fingerprints or other marks.

    • Light Use: After 24 hours, the surface will be dry enough for light use. However, it's still recommended to avoid heavy use or placing hot items on the surface.

  • Full Cure:

    • Full Curing Time: The oil will reach full cure within 3-5 days. Once fully cured, the finish will achieve maximum hardness and durability.

  • Cleaning:

    • Regular Cleaning: For regular cleaning, simply wipe the surface with a damp cloth.

    • Avoid Harsh Chemicals: Avoid using harsh chemicals such as bleach, solvents, or abrasive cleaners. These can damage the finish and strip away the oil's protective layer.

  • Rubio Maintenance Kit:

    • Comprehensive Care: The Rubio Maintenance Kit provides a range of specialised cleaning solutions to address specific issues:

      • Tannin Remover: Effectively removes rings or stains left by mugs or glasses.

      • Limespot Remover: For the removal of animal urine stains, wine stains or other lime stains.

      • Grease Remover: Effectively removes grease and oil stains from kitchen surfaces. Perfect for around hobs or on dining tables.

      • All Natural Wood Cleaner: A general-purpose cleaner for fresh staining and everyday maintenance.
