Every bespoke furniture project comes with its own unique challenges, and this bespoke solid beech office desk was no exception. Built for an upholsterer looking for a durable and functional workspace, this project combined traditional materials, modern techniques, and plenty of problem-solving along the way.
The client supplied the timber for the build directly from their own timber supplier, along with a set of beautiful cast iron Singer sewing machine legs they wanted incorporated into the final design. The goal was to create a desk that felt solid, timeless, and practical for everyday use.
Working with Solid Beech Timber
The desk was built using solid beech planks supplied by the client. While the timber looked fantastic initially, one of the biggest challenges became apparent once machining began.

After flattening and preparing the boards, it became clear the timber wasn’t fully moisture stable. As tensions within the wood were released during machining, some of the boards began moving again, wanting to twist and bow back out of flat.

Rather than forcing the timber into place, I made the decision to allow the wood time to naturally relax. The boards were stacked carefully and left in a suitable environment so they could settle before being re-machined. It’s one of those stages in woodworking where patience is essential — rushing unstable timber into a final assembly can create far bigger issues later down the line.
Once the timber had properly settled, I was able to machine everything flat again and move forward with the glue-up and construction process.
Incorporating the Vintage Singer Sewing Machine Legs

One of the standout design features of this desk was the inclusion of the original cast iron Singer sewing machine legs supplied by the client. These added a huge amount of character and industrial style to the project.
However, during the build process, it became clear there were limitations with the mounting points on the cast iron bases. They simply weren’t designed to securely support a large, heavy solid timber desk top in the way this project required.
After discussing the options with the client, we decided the best approach would be to use two of the Singer legs for visual character while designing and fabricating custom A-frame steel legs to provide the strength and stability the desk needed.
This solution allowed us to retain the original industrial aesthetic while ensuring the desk would remain structurally solid for everyday use.
Using Steel C-Channel for Added Strength
This project also marked the first time I used steel C-channel reinforcement within a desk top.
Rather than purchasing pre-made sections, I decided to fabricate my own using steel bought online. The channels were cut to size and inset into the underside of the solid beech top.
The C-channel serves two major purposes:
Helping keep the desk top flat and stable over time, reducing the chances of curling or cupping as the timber naturally moves through seasonal changes.
Providing a strong and reliable mounting point for the custom steel legs.
Because solid timber is constantly moving with temperature and humidity changes, adding this reinforcement gives the desk significant long-term durability while remaining completely hidden from view.

Creating a Discreet Privacy Riser
The client also wanted a way to hide the mounting hardware underneath the desk while adding a little privacy for whoever was using it.

Together, we came up with the idea of a riser fixed to the front edge of the desk. The riser overhangs both the underside and top surface by around 100mm, creating a clean and discreet panel that hides fixings and structure without making the desk feel oversized or bulky.
It’s a subtle feature, but one that adds both practicality and a cleaner overall appearance.
Finishing with Rubio Monocoat
To finish the desk, the entire piece was treated with Rubio Monocoat Oil Plus 2C Pure.
This finish really brought out the natural beauty of the beech, enhancing the grain and warmth of the timber while still maintaining a natural-looking appearance. It also provides a durable and hard-wearing finish ideal for a busy working environment.

Built for Everyday Use
This project was a great example of how bespoke furniture making often involves adapting to challenges as they arise. From stabilising moving timber to redesigning the leg structure and experimenting with steel reinforcement, every stage of the process was focused on creating a desk that not only looked good but would perform reliably for years to come.
The final result is a solid beech office desk that blends traditional materials, industrial character, and modern craftsmanship into one truly bespoke piece.
